As a busy working Mother of 3, some tasks seems to fall by the wayside. Cleaning the fridge out, organizing my closets as often as I’d like and disposing of my old medications on the regular. Nothing is worse then reaching for a medication, but to only have a ton of old medications in my cabinet that are useless. These meds need to be disposed of…but I always struggle with how!
Working as I RN I often have the question asked of me “where can I recycle my unused medications?” As a nurse, I really try to educate others on ways to keep their families safe and healthy. You might not realize it, but discarding of medications the proper way is one of those ways to keep your loved ones safe!
People often think that throwing them away or flushing them down the toilet is acceptable. It’s actually very unsafe to do both! More often than not, the end result is damage to our environment, drug diversion or the drug being abused by others. For those of you that have medications to get rid of…
Did you know that Saturday, October 27th 2018 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day? It’s a day for you to dispose of unused medications – safely!
Spreading the word about the importance of properly disposing medications is so very important.
- 77% of opioid prescription medications taken by new users are obtained from a friend or relative! (Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
- 62% of teens who admit taking medication for non-medical reasons say they get drugs from medicine cabinets in their homes. (Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
- According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately fifty-four million Americans over the age of 12 have used prescription medications for non-medical reasons at least once in their lifetime.
With statistics like that, it’s crucial that everyone know about this program and spread the word! (Please share by clicking below this post any of my share buttons!)
In an effort to assist in reducing these issues and bringing awareness to the massive opioid crisis that is plaguing many families, LifeInCheck created a Drug Disposal program that provides consumers with a safe option to discard their unused or outdated prescription medications in secure receptacles located across the US.
To find a LifeInCheck Drug Disposal Program in your area, simply enter your city and state or zip code and search radius and we will provide a list of safe drug disposal locations in your area.
Head to the closet station and look for the green box. Pull down the lever and drop in any prescription medications you are not using. Then you’re done! You’ve safely discarded medications and helped to keep others safe (including the environment).
Be sure to dispose of your expired medications or unused medications on October 27th correctly!
Thank you for helping to protect your family and our communities.
