Good To Know Facts about Marijuana in Colorado

This post is sponsored by Single Edition Media on behalf of the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.

Colorado is a trailblazing state.  We’re typically the first to get snow every winter and one of the first on the list of healthiest states in the country (most years).  We’re also one of the first states to legalize retail marijuana in the nation, which has left a lot of room for educating our public here in Colorado.  As a full time RN, I try to keep up with the latest in all things health.  Substance use like retail marijuana is one area that I’ve been trying to stay educated on. There’s a GREAT website that I want to share with you, if you have kids, friends, loved ones or work in a state where retail marijuana is legal – you need to educate yourself on all aspects regarding marijuana, your health and the law.

The following information all pertains to Colorado as a state and the laws here in Colorado:

Did you know that you must be 21, like drinking, to use retail marijuana?

Did you know that if you’re caught under the age of 21 there are legal repercussions?  Consequences like losing financial aid for college, even outside of Colorado! Tickets, court appearances and more.  (Source http://goodtoknowcolorado.com/talk/)

Beyond the legal effects there are health effects.  We all know the reasons why some people want to use marijuana; “It calms me down”  “it helps with my pain”, “it controls my nausea”.  Beyond the medicinal benefits, others need to be aware of the health effects of underage marijuana use.

“It’s important for you to learn some of the negative health impacts so that you can help young people understand some of the risks they could be taking.” – http://goodtoknowcolorado.com/talk/)

A great website that everyone needs to spend some time on is the Good to Know Colorado website, from the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.  If you have kids, it is VERY important that you inform yourself, so you can inform your kids.  The website also has printable pdf’s that you can download if you need some talking points or want to pass out the information to others!

I personally learned a lot by spending 10 minutes reading through the points on Good to Know Colorado.  It’s a site that I’ll be recommending to patients and families, as well as friends and loved ones.  It’s a beneficial site for all regardless of your stance on the marijuana laws.  Be a responsible and safe Coloradan!

Please share this with others!  It’s a way to protect and inform our youth and Coloradans regarding a newly legal substance.  Educate and inform because it’s “Good to Know”!
