How to create a Family Plan

Fire Safety : How to create a Family Plan

Parents, did you know October is National Fire Prevention Month?

It is…and while there’s lots of “monthly” events to talk about, fire safety is one of the most important to raise awareness about!

As a mom, full time school nurse and blogger, I love reaching other parents to discuss the topics that really are important. Today, I’m sharing with you my tips to make sure your family is prepared and ready for any emergency fire situation in your home!

If you have school aged children, you know they practice fire drills at school. Do you ever ask them about how that fire drill made them feel? Do you make your own family plan to ensure your kids know what to do in case of a fire in your home?

We do, and I’m hoping to encourage others to do the same!

When it comes to fire and home safety, the brand I know and trust is Kidde. Kidde is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fire safety products including smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and fire extinguishers! We happen to have all 3 in our home and you should too!

Kidde’s mission is to provide solutions that protect people and property from the effects of fire and its related hazards. With more than 100 years of service, today you’ll find Kidde products in homes and businesses around the world! Their products help prevent injuries and minimize damage by alerting people to dangers fast, with time to act!

Ways to prepare your family

  • Questions to ask yourself before you make a plan:
    • Is your home prepared for a fire?
    • Do you have smoke alarms?
    • Do you have a fire extinguisher?
    • If you do…are they expired?
    • Are the batteries in your smoke alarms new?
    • If you have a basement, do your window wells have ladders?
  • Next, make a plan.  Plan where your will family exit the home if a fire has started in different parts of the home. Don’t forget to talk about leaving the home if main doors are blocked by the fire. Be sure to talk through different scenarios!
  • Next, call a family meeting. I know…sounds corny, but it’s not! It’s important for families to spend time talking and discussing important safety drills at home!
    • Use this family meeting to talk about how you have prepared the home for fires and other emergencies.  Show them what the fire alarm sounds like and what the carbon monoxide alarm sounds like.  Without hearing it, the kids may not know what they’re hearing…so be sure to give an example.
    • Show the kids where you store the fire extinguisher and how to use it! (Use online videos if needed so they know what the spray will look like).

As a parent, I know I will do whatever it takes to protect what matters – my family, and our home!  Being prepared is the best way to have peace of mind that your family is safe, and will know how to respond to an emergency.

Fortunately for fire safety, it only takes a moment. Take the time today to protect your home and family with Kidde’s fire safety essentials, available at The Home Depot or Walmart.
