Screen time is a big deal nowadays, especially this year with so many kids learning online. The last thing some parents want is more screen time. In our home, we have some of the strictest screen time rules around. There is zero screen time….unless they are using learning apps like ABCmouse. Currently ABCmouse is the ONLY app I allow my kids to “think” they’re playing on
I say THINK because they don’t realize they’re learning. They love it that much!
My son is in first grade and has struggled with spelling and writing. He’s mastering reading and growing so much thanks to his amazing teachers, and extra fun help from ABCmouse.
First thing he loves about ABCmouse is that he can personalize his avatar. The next thing he loves is that it’s interest-based learning. THIS part is where parents need to listen up…interest-based learning is huge! Interest–based learning uses children’s interests as the basis for curriculum, which ensures that teaching responds to children’s strengths, abilities and interests, leading to engagement in learning. (My husband is an elementary school teacher and agrees that this is what really attracts him to the app. Hence why it’s the only one approved for screen time! Lol). Here are some highlights:
- Learning Activity: Individual games support learning on ABCmouse. Learning Activities encourage a love of learning by providing a fun and engaging way for children to explore and interact with educational content and concepts.
- Step-by-Step Learning Path: A feature that presents the full ABCmouse curriculum in a carefully designed program. As a child completes each lesson on the Learning Path, he or she is guided to the next one.
- Progress Tracker: This allows parents to see how much progress their child is making. In addition to the display of total number of Learning Activities completed in each category (books, songs, puzzles, games, and art), there are easy-to-read graphs that show progress both by academic level and by curriculum subject.
- Tickets & Rewards: Encourages children to complete Learning Activities by rewarding them with tickets. Tickets can be used to obtain virtual items on the site, such as a new fish. The Tickets and Rewards System makes learning a game and also teaches important math skills as children keep track of tickets earned and spent. (My kids LOVE this feature! They race to see who can get the most tickets).
- Avatar: The avatar is a customizable character that a child can choose to represent him or herself.
