Bromine & the Safey of our Food
Common sense would dictate most people do not choose to drink pool or hot tub water to quench their thirst. The taste is not particularly delightful, but more importantly, the chemicals in these waters are not something we want, or should have, in our bodies. Yet, many people consume large quantities of the same chemicals in their daily diets. Bromine is a chemical found in the same family as chlorine, fluorine, and iodine. It is used as a treatment agent in pools and hot tubs to keep the water clean and clear. Unfortunately our food industry has also added bromine derived chemicals into several major areas of food production. Methyl Bromide is used as a pesticide, Potassium Bromate is used as a dough conditioner, and it is also found in many soft drinks as Bromated Vegetable Oil. It is found in plastics, personal care products, and other everyday goods as well. Severe health hazards can occur for anyone who is exposed to too much Bromine. (Problems like Thyroid gland dysfunction. Read on…)
Bromine is a toxic substance and acts as an inhibitor for the absorption of iodine in the body. Iodine is a substance our body requires to function correctly. This leads to an increase in the risk of many diseases such as cancer, kidney and nervous system disorders, major organ failure, schizophrenia, birth defects, and growth issues. Bromine also directly affects our thyroid gland. Our Thyroid regulates hormones that control the proper functioning of our body. If our Thyroid gland is not functioning correctly it can severely impact our entire body’s ability to maintain a healthy balance. Bromine has shown repeatedly to cause severe health hazards for those consuming it which is why more than 100 countries across the globe have outlawed its use in food products. Despite the obvious risks and concerns the FDA and our food industry still continue to allow products known to be dangerous to exist in what we eat (scary and completely unnecessary right). Kind of sounds like their concern is not our health!
The main concern of these companies is the almighty dollar, so it is up to each of us to educate ourselves for our own personal health and that of our families. We need to take control of what we deem acceptable on our tables. Buying organic foods provides a much healthier food source. You can either spend the few extra dollars on your grocery bill now, or you can spend many more of those dollars on your medical bills later, the choice is yours.
