Every parent has heard of them, but no one actually thinks it’ll happen to their children.
LICE! I know I know, you’re cringing as you read this. It’s a difficult subject for parents alike to talk about much less deal with. Well I’m here to tell you my story off sheer horror, and it involves lice!
Last summer my now six year old joined a summer T-ball league. My husband was the coach and of course my son, who was signed up for soccer, had games at the same exact times each weekend. Until one weekend when the games didn’t overlap and I finally got to watch my daughter play T-ball. Then I saw it…my kid had been SHARING A HELMET with 9 other kids on the team all summer long.
WHAT!
Immediately I grabbed my husband and asked why all the kids were sharing one batting helmet!?!? Really…why didn’t I asked this before!? It’s been weeks, and the mom and nurse in me didn’t ask about this practice! #nursemomfail

Sharing hats, brushes, towels etc are HUGE no no’s because this is how lice spread! Everyone knows that right? Everyone except my child’s T-ball team.
That weekend I tried to forget about the sharing of the helmet, until one night when I was combing my daughters hair and found a bug that I had never seen before. My heart sank.
I screamed. Loud. This was my mom nightmare.
Immediately I called my husband in and continued looking though my daughters hair. I then saw tiny white dots on some of her hair strands! I’ve seen this many times in my job as a school nurse. I’ve made the dreaded phone call many times. I never thought it would happen to me! Alas it did, and I knew the culprit! The sharing of that T-ball helmet…transmitted those nasty critters onto my precious girls head. I could barely look at them…I felt horrible that she had them.
Yes I cried. Yes I made a huge deal about it. Yes my husband laughed at me. I can handle a lot of illnesses, diseases etc, but there’s just something about lice that makes my skin crawl. I know others feel this way right? Everyone cries over lice right? Maybe not, but instead of continuing to freak out about the lice, we needed to do something to kill it! ASAP!
I sent my husband to Walgreens right away to buy a treatment kit. If you haven’t heard much about lice lately know this, there are now super lice!!
What are super lice? Well they are lice that don’t die essentially with traditional treatments. Like bacteria, lice are now smart and they have developed resistance to many over the counter treatments.
He found the Nix Ultra® Lice Treatment kit that kills super lice! Yes! It’s non-toxic, pesticide free and easy to apply! It’s also a #1 Pediatrician recommended!
It truly is a one-stop lice solution, and I have no time to keep applying treatments on my kids!
LICE SURVIVAL GUIDE:
Don’t cry and let your home feel like it’s being taken over by pests! Take control of the situation and do the following!
#1 – Head to your nearest Walgreens and buy the Nix Ultra® Lice Treatment. Follow the directions exactly as it says! Hint: the comb that is included in the kit is going to be your best friend for the next month! Hang on to it.
#2 – Wash all of your bedding where the infected person has laid. Including sofa pillows! Wash them normal and be sure to dry them on HOT heat for at least 60 minutes. The heat is what will kill any live bugs or eggs.
#3 – After you’ve applied the treatment as needed, use the nit comb again on all affected persons. If you’re unsure if you’re affected, use the nit comb. Start by combing sections of the hair, Then go back and do it 3x times. Be sure the tip of the comb comes into contact with the scalp the entire time. The comb will lift away any live bugs or nits (their eggs that stick to the hair). Removing the nits is VITAL to ensure they don’t hatch and start the process all over again.
#4 – If you have items you can’t wash, like a large stuffed animal, bag it up for a minimum of 2 weeks in an airtight trash bag. This will suffocate the lice.
#5 – slowly vacuum all carpets. Lice can live off the body for a few days, and you don’t need to re-infect your family!
#6 – Relax!

You can use the Lice Tracker to see how your area looks when it comes to lice. Like I said, I never thought it would happen to me and it did! It happened to the whole T-ball team thanks to one child who had it. Yay for shared hats! 🙁
