Furniture Makeover: Dark Vintage Hutch

Finding a new painting project is always on my mind. Am I obsessed with my hobby, possibly. lol. I LOVE finding old, dingy items with good bones to makeover and give life again.

Enter a 1980’s dark vintage cabinet/hutch. It had GREAT bones, just too dingy and dark of a color for any home.

What are these called? Unsure but I call it unfortunate to look at in any home. TIME for paint!

Ready to flip this Dark Vintage Hutch and give it a new life!

Here’s the before image to get an idea of how old and dingy this was. (Ignore the junk…you get the idea right).

This specific one I found on the facebook marketplace. I find most of my items for makeovers there. I also have some luck with the “next door ” app when people list items for free. (Just a tip for anyone starting out)

Total investment in this item was $25 including the paint. I was lucky enough to snag this hutch for FREE! (I have an alert on facebook! It saves me time, and ensures I never miss a good deal =free items)

The paint I used was a discontinued brand called Cece Caldwell Paint. You can find LOTS of great brands here. I’m currently staying away from Dixie Belle products as there seems to be some shady business practices going on between them and brand reps. SO, until we know more I’ll be supporting LOTS of other brands. 🙂

I loved the Chalk/Clay paint finish of the CeCe paints. It created a great matte, easy to distress look.

I decided on a dark color to match the current styles of having dark accents in a home. I personally love the farmhouse cottage look, so this color was perfect.

I often leave the top of a piece wood, but this one had LOTS of deep scratches. So I decided in the end to paint it.

The back of the cabinet had a natural vertical shiplap look. So I decided to highlight that with an off white color.

Hand painting LOTS of corners and taping off area to ensure no bleeding.

New drawer pulls and knobs was a must, since the original were SO out of style.

I found my pulls on amazon and at hobby lobby. See the knobs and pulls below:

Adding some light distressing around the edges was also a most do, since the fully painted piece just didn’t look as amazing as I wanted it too.

I used a handheld sanding tool that gives me good grip and no mistakes to paint near it.

Drumroll for the final product……..bbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ….

Tada!!

Vintage Cabinet updated with a dark gray/matte chalk paint

I was so pleased with how cute it turned it. It had great bones, just the wrong colors for 2023!

What do you think of all the cute details?

Next time you see a free cabinet that solid wood, grab it!  Have fun painting and giving it another life.   One more item we’re keeping out of the landfill!
